Parent & Grandparent Sponsorship

The Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship program opens each year with a cap of 20,000 applications. Due to the Corona Virus pandemic, the program opened in mid-October 2020 with a cap of 10,000 applications only. The 2021 program will open with a cap of 30,000 applications.

The person sponsoring the parents or grandparents must be

•   At least 18 years old
•   Living in Canada
•   Must be Canadian Citizen or a Canadian Permanent Resident or a person registered in Canada as Indian (Native) under the Canadian Indian Act
•   Able to meet the income requirement for the last 3 years

Income required for the 3 tax years right before the day you apply (sponsors applying in 2021)

Eligible sponsors will have approximately 3 weeks to fill out an “Intent to Sponsor” Form when the program opens and receive a confirmation number. IRCC will then do a random selection and invite potential sponsors via email to sponsor their parents and grandparents. The sponsors then have 60 days to submit the completed application along with all the documents as per the generated checklist.

During this period, the sponsors can also invite their parents or grandparents on a Super Visa, which allows them to stay for a 2 year period in Canada. In case of the stay period coming to an end, they have the option to extend their stay up to 1 year at a time.

In a nutshell, the Parents and Grandparental is a 6 step process

• Submit the Interest to sponsor form
• Get an invitation to apply
• Get the application package
• Pay the application fees
• Submit the completed application
• Update the application with additional information (biometrics, police clearances, medicals etc.)
